Ingredients

For the Brownie Base:

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

4 large eggs

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional)

For the Salted Caramel:

1 cup granulated sugar

6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed

1/2 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon sea salt (plus more for sprinkling)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.

    Make the Brownie Batter:

      - In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, remove from heat and whisk in both sugars until well combined.

        - Stir in the vanilla extract and then add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

          - In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.

            - Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined. If desired, fold in the chocolate chips.

              Bake the Brownies:

                - Pour the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan and spread evenly.

                  - Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool in the pan while you prepare the caramel.

                    Prepare the Salted Caramel:

                      - In a medium saucepan, heat the granulated sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly with a silicone spatula or wooden spoon until it melts into a light amber color. Be careful not to burn it.

                        - Once melted, quickly add in the cubed butter and stir until fully melted.

                          - Slowly drizzle in the heavy cream, continuing to stir until smooth. If the caramel seizes up, keep stirring over low heat until it returns to a liquid state.

                            - Remove from heat and stir in the sea salt.

                              Assemble the Brownies:

                                - Pour the warm salted caramel over the cooled brownies, spreading it evenly. Reserve a bit of caramel for drizzling on top later if desired.

                                  - Sprinkle a little extra sea salt over the caramel layer for that delicious contrast.

                                    Chill and Serve:

                                      - Allow the brownies to cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate for about 30 minutes to set the caramel.

                                        - Once set, lift the brownies out of the pan using the overhanging parchment paper, and cut into squares.

                                          - Drizzle with the reserved caramel if desired and serve!
