Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour (heat-treated)

1 cup brown sugar, packed

½ cup granulated sugar

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 teaspoon salt

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup cream cheese, softened

1 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon almond extract (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Flour: Start by heat-treating the all-purpose flour to eliminate any harmful bacteria. Spread the flour on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-7 minutes. Allow to cool before using.

Make the Cookie Dough Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Beat together using an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.

Add Vanilla and Dry Ingredients: Mix in the vanilla extract and salt. Gradually add the cooled heat-treated flour, mixing until just incorporated.

Incorporate the Chocolate Chips: Fold in 1½ cups of the semi-sweet chocolate chips, reserving the remaining chips for topping.

Prepare the Cream Cheese Mixture: In another bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth and creamy. If using, mix in the almond extract.

Layer the Bars: In a parchment-lined 9x9-inch baking dish, spread half of the cookie dough mixture evenly across the bottom. Press down firmly to create an even layer.

Add Cream Cheese Layer: Spoon the cream cheese mixture over the cookie dough layer, spreading it out evenly.

Top with Remaining Cookie Dough and Chocolate Chips: Drop spoonfuls of the remaining cookie dough on top of the cream cheese layer. Use a spatula to gently spread it out as much as you can without disturbing the cream cheese layer. Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of chocolate chips on top, pressing them down lightly.

Chill: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2-3 hours, or until the bars are firm enough to cut.

Serve and Enjoy: Once chilled, lift the bars out of the dish using the parchment paper. Cut into squares and serve! Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
