Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup sugar

1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

1 tsp salt

1 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

3 large eggs, room temperature (2 for dough, 1 for egg wash)

1 tsp vanilla extract

Zest of 1 lemon

Zest of 1 orange

Colored sprinkles (for decoration)

4-6 dyed eggs (optional, tradition varies)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt. Set aside.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, 2 eggs, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and orange zest. Mix well.

Form the Dough: Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour the yeast mixture and butter-egg mixture into it. Stir until combined, then knead the dough in the bowl or on a floured surface until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes).

First Rise: Lightly grease a large bowl and place the dough inside, turning to coat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, until doubled in size.

Shape the Bread: Punch down the risen dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Divide into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long strand (about 12-14 inches) and braid them together. Alternatively, you can twist and shape them into a round wreath.

Prepare for Second Rise: If using dyed eggs, gently tuck them into the braided bread. Place the shaped bread on a lined baking sheet. Cover with the towel again and allow it to rise for about 30-60 minutes.

Preheat Oven: While the bread is rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Egg Wash: Beat the remaining egg and brush it over the surface of the bread for a shiny finish.

Bake: Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. If it starts to brown too quickly, cover loosely with aluminum foil.

Cool and Decorate: Once baked, remove it from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack. Once cooled, you can sprinkle colored sprinkles on top for added decoration.
