Ingredients

4 cups all-purpose flour

1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)

¼ cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons salt

½ teaspoon baking soda

1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Coarse sea salt (for topping)

1 tablespoon melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions

Activation of Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it’s frothy.

Mixing Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast is ready, pour it into the flour mixture and mix until a dough begins to form.

Kneading: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Shaping Pretzels: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope (about 24 inches) and shape it into a pretzel.

Baking Soda Bath: In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to boil and dissolve the baking soda in it. Gently lower each pretzel into the water for about 30 seconds, then remove it with a slotted spoon and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Egg Wash & Topping: Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.

Baking: Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the pretzels are golden brown.

Finishing Touch: Optional – Brush warm pretzels with melted butter for extra flavor.

Cooling: Allow the pretzels to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm with your favorite dipping sauces!
