Ingredients

2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

1/4 cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)

1 cup whole milk, warmed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)

Oil for frying (canola or vegetable)

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup milk (for glaze)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

Mix Liquid Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the warmed milk, granulated sugar, and salt. Stir in the eggs and melted butter. Add the frothy yeast mixture and mix well.

Incorporate Flour: Gradually add the flour to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms. You may need to adjust the flour slightly if the dough is too sticky.

Knead Dough: On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Shape Donuts: After rising, punch down the dough and transfer it to a floured surface. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out donuts using a donut cutter or two circular cutters.

Second Rise: Place the cut donuts on a floured baking sheet. Cover and let them rise again for another 30-40 minutes until puffy.

Heat Oil: In a deep fryer or large pot, heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Carefully add the donuts in batches, frying them for about 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown.

Drain: Remove the donuts using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Prepare the Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Glaze Donuts: Dip the warm donuts into the glaze, hanging them above the bowl to allow excess glaze to drip off.

Serve: Enjoy your warm, homemade Krispy Kremes while they're fresh!
