Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp salt

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 cup plain yogurt

1/2 cup warm water (110°F/43°C)

2 tbsp melted butter (plus extra for brushing)

3-4 cloves garlic, minced

2 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

Olive oil for greasing

Instructions

Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. In a separate bowl, mix warm water and yogurt until well combined. Gradually add the yogurt mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until a shaggy dough forms.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it's sticky, dust with a little more flour as needed.

First Rise: Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover it with a damp towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.

Prepare Garlic Butter: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, and chopped cilantro (if using). Set aside for later use.

Shape the Naan: Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and let them rest for about 10 minutes to relax the gluten.

Roll Out Naan: On a lightly floured surface, use a rolling pin to flatten each ball into an oval or tear-drop shape, about 1/4 inch thick.

Cook the Naan: Heat a cast-iron skillet or frying pan over high heat. Place one naan in the dry pan and cook for 1-2 minutes until bubbles appear on the surface and the bottom is golden brown. Flip the naan over and cook for another 1-2 minutes.

Brush with Garlic Butter: As soon as the naan is done cooking, remove it from the pan and immediately brush one side with the prepared garlic butter. Repeat this process with the remaining pieces of dough.

Serve Warm: Serve hot, straight from the skillet, as a perfect accompaniment to your favorite Indian dishes or enjoy with dips!
