Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)

1 teaspoon active dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)

2 tablespoons plain yogurt

1 tablespoon olive oil (plus more for cooking)

2-3 cloves garlic (minced)

2 tablespoons fresh cilantro (chopped, optional)

Melted butter (for brushing)

Additional salt (to taste)

Instructions

Activate the Yeast:

    - In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.

      Make the Dough:

        - In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yogurt and yeast mixture, followed by the olive oil.

          - Gradually mix the flour into the wet ingredients using a spatula or your hands until a rough dough forms.

            Knead the Dough:

              - Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead for about 8-10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If it's too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.

                First Rise:

                  - Lightly oil a clean bowl and place the dough inside, turning it to coat all sides. Cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until it doubles in size.

                    Prepare Garlic Mixture:

                      - While the dough is rising, mix minced garlic, chopped cilantro (if using), and a pinch of salt with melted butter in a small bowl. Set aside.

                        Shape the Naan:

                          - Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release air and divide it into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and let them rest for 10 minutes under a cloth.

                            Roll Out the Naan:

                              - Lightly flour your work surface. Take one ball of dough and roll it out into an oval or tear shape, about 1/4 inch thick. Repeat with remaining dough balls.

                                Cook the Naan:

                                  - Heat a skillet or tandoor over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully place a rolled out naan in the skillet. Cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbles form and the bottom is golden. Flip and cook the other side for about another 1-2 minutes, applying the garlic butter mixture with a brush on each side.

                                    Keep Warm:

                                      - Remove the naan from the skillet and place it on a plate. Cover with a kitchen towel to keep warm while cooking the remaining naan. Briefly brush with more garlic butter before serving.

                                        Serve:

                                          - Serve the warm garlic naan alongside your favorite curries or dips. Enjoy your homemade, soft, and buttery naan!
