Ingredients

1 loaf of day-old bread (like brioche or challah), cut into 1-inch cubes

8 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (plus additional for serving)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Place the cubed day-old bread in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts evenly over the bread.

Make the Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.

Combine: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Gently press down on the cubes with a spatula to help them absorb the liquid.

Cover and Refrigerate: Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Place in the refrigerator to marinate overnight (or at least for 4 hours if you’re short on time).

Preheat and Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the casserole from the refrigerator while the oven is preheating. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.

Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for about 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup before serving.

Enjoy: Cut into squares and serve warm. This casserole pairs wonderfully with fresh fruit or whipped cream for an extra indulgence!
