Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage

1 jar (24 ounces) marinara sauce

15 ounces ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (divided)

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Meat Sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until fragrant and softened, about 2-3 minutes. Add the ground beef or sausage and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain fat if necessary.

Combine with Sauce: Pour the marinara sauce into the skillet, stirring well to combine. Simmer for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld.

Mix the Ricotta Filling: In a medium mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup of shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, egg, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.

Assemble the Baked Ziti: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the meat sauce, stirring to combine. In a 9x13-inch baking dish, spread half of the ziti mixture evenly. Spoon the ricotta mixture over the ziti, then layer with the remaining ziti on top.

Top with Cheese: Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese on top of the layered ziti.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling and golden brown.

Garnish and Serve: Let the baked ziti cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve hot and enjoy your cheesy delight!
