Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup dark chocolate chips

1 cup dried cherries, chopped (or fresh if in season)

1/2 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.

Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs, one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next. Mix in the vanilla extract until well combined.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

Fold in Mix-ins: Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips, chopped cherries, and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed through the dough.

Scoop Cookies: Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, drop rounded balls of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set but the centers are still soft. The cookies will continue to firm up as they cool.

Cool: Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serve: Enjoy your decadent chocolate cherry cookies warm or at room temperature with a glass of milk or a cup of coffee.
