Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup caramel bits

1/4 cup heavy cream

Sea salt for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.

Prepare the Caramel Sauce: In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the caramel bits and heavy cream. Stir continuously until smooth and fully melted. Remove from heat and set aside to cool slightly.

Mix Butter and Sugars: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then, stir in the vanilla extract until fully incorporated.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.

Fold in Chocolate Chips: Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Spread the Batter: Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly across the bottom.

Add Caramel Swirl: Drizzle half of the prepared caramel sauce over the batter. Use a knife or toothpick to swirl the caramel gently into the batter.

Top with Remaining Batter: Spread the remaining batter over the caramel layer, gently smoothing it out. Drizzle the rest of the caramel sauce on top, and use a knife once again to create a swirl pattern.

Bake: Place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs.

Cool and Serve: Remove the bars from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 15 minutes. Then, lift them out using the parchment overhang and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, cut into squares and sprinkle with sea salt if desired.
