Before you even start mixing your ingredients, the first step is to preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Preheating is crucial as it ensures that your brownies will bake evenly and at the correct temperature. This initial heat will help achieve that perfect crust on top while keeping the inside fudgy and gooey.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)

3 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup caramel sauce, plus extra for drizzling (store-bought or homemade)

½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Melt the Butter: In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of granulated sugar until combined.

Mix the Eggs and Vanilla: Allow the butter-sugar mixture to cool slightly, then mix in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract. Stir until fully incorporated.

Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined.

Add Chocolate Chips: Fold in the chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the batter.

Spread in Pan: Pour about half of the brownie batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth it out evenly.

Add Caramel Layer: Drizzle the caramel sauce over the brownie base layer, using about ½ cup. If desired, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the caramel.

Top with Remaining Batter: Pour the remaining brownie batter over the caramel layer, spreading it out gently to cover the caramel completely.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out mostly clean (small moist crumbs are okay but should not be wet).

Cool and Drizzle: Once baked, remove from the oven and let the brownies cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes. Drizzle with additional caramel sauce just before serving for an extra touch of sweetness.

Slice and Serve: Cut into squares or rectangles, serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy your heavenly caramel brownies!
